hello all, a few years ago i was given some boards of yew, they were already very old and dry when i got them, i tried turning some into platters but they were just to far gone and a bit dangerous to turn with. so earlier this summer!!! i did this with them

The bench arms have been in my family for years and are extremley heavy, my parents asked me to paint them and then wouldint pay for good quality wood so i rememberd the yew and bodged this together.

Very nice George, looks a good use of the boards, and a nice way to show the charachter of Yew,one of me favs :D
Why was it too dangerous to turn, and what finish did you put on it :?: :?:

hello paul, it was/ has lots of rot and large fine splits in it, i have had bits similar to this explode before on the lathe and its not nice so i decided against it this time.
I saturated the wood with danish oil, 15 - 20 coats easily and it was still soaking in!! the wood had been stored in an attic before i got it.

Just make sure that you aren't wearing tights when you sit on it....edges are a bit rough but apart from that I like it. Good way of using what would otherwise be wasted planks of lovely looking wood.

I tend not to wear tights in the Garden

Neither Do I ... I much prefer a light summer frock and heavy use of the immac, and in winter.. I'll brave the elements in a stout tweed twinset and show a nicely turned ankle adorned with a subtle cuban heel.

oops... wrong forum

:p :D :p
