What a beast!

I've been on the hunt for a secondhand bandsaw for a while. a Startrite 352 is my aim as it seems to fit the sweet spot between trade and DIY, resaw and detail. In my perusing I came across this most magnificent of machines, 48" wheels and what looks like a 2 or even 3" wide blade. Anyone ever seen such a beast in the flesh? I would happily enlarge the first image and mount it on the wall, although swmbo would likely protest.

Thats a resaw generally used for secondary conversion, Robinson used to make a 36inch model the EFT which was a popular machine in joinery shops and wood mills.

One disadvantage of resaws is that the blades dont have a very long running time, maybe 8 hours. Also the bottom wheel size means a hole had to be cut in the floor.

Wonder if Steve's done a DVD on setting that big boy up? a couple years ago while touring the Highlands we stopped at a tiny village and got talking to a guy who had a water powered bandsaw he had a small outbuilding next to the burn and he was in the process of restoring it to cut timber for his kilns (he was a potter) amazing piece of kit and hope to see it working one day.

Awe, Howdens are now in the building that was built in, or at least the bit of the building that's left. The rest of the site has tin sheds all around.

I have no comment on "the beast" but I would like to say I think you are right to be looking for an old 352. As I think I said in another thread a few days ago, it does 99% of the jobs 99% of amateurs (and most small trade shops come to think of it) will ever need a bandsaw to do.
