hi do any of you use welsh slate wen you sharpen
i use 1000 /6000 waterstone then onto the welsh slate which comes in around 8 to 10,000
it does a very good job and they come in a wider than standard waterstone then i finnisg on a strop of either leather glued to a board or direct to piece of mdf and this system works very well for me

That's an interesting one. Can't say I have ever tried it but I would have thought that the grit of slate would be likely to vary quite widely on a fairly localised basis, just as does the texture and other characteristics of most forms of natural stone. I have some grey/green Brazilian slate, maybe I'll give it a try.

i got my stone from ebay the chap is a joiner who makes them and alot of the guy who use cut throat razors use it i am bore than happy and at £22.00 delivered it was worth every penny

8 - 10,000 is pretty fine. There's one claiming up to 15,000!! Take a while to remove a nick with one of those.
I see that some are using a slurry stone. I assume it speeds the cutting. Anyone know how they compare to the equivalent Japanese waterstone?
