Yep ..... seeing these now, I agree too.. even better !!
Those are absolutely stunning John ...

Worthy of a good , hearty 'chest puffing' session. ! ... superb work !

Hope Ray approves too !

The Cherry one does it for me. Well done mate.

seriously great looking pens...I like the straight finish & it has to be wood
for me...sorry. Corian is good to look at.
Nice mirror finish on the pens...Would buy one of you myself...

john, you got some nice pens there my friend. you are certainly getting better, i can see the improvements already. i can see two faults with them, please take this as constructive critisism.
it looks like you have some stain on the cherry pen clip.
and both the two corian pens are not turned enough at the centre band.try and get a smmoth transition between the two blanks and centre band. other than that i think you have it nailed. good job, they do look nice. i like em all. hope this helps you.

hi john
agree with what colin has said, maybe your not quite going to the bushings enough.
Love the cherry and for me and particularly like the euro kit on it, thinking of getting some chrome ones shortly, i also like the corian with the dividing section, just going from one colour to the next doesn't really do it.
great to see them, keep at it.

Superb work, John - like them all! The finish is very nice and the corian comes up really well.

I have a question about the whole pen making thing. I like the wood part of the pens but is it just me or does anyone else think the fittings look to cheap? Are there better quality pen fittings or are they all the same?

Very nice John, i particularly like the Cherry, might have to dig some out of the wood pile & try some. I didn`t think Cherry would look that good as a pen.
Thanks for showing.

All very nice john, the Cherry looks gorgeous, but i also like the middle one.Not so keen on the blue finish on the parts of the third one.

the most common type of pen kit is the 24k gold plate, sometimes its good, ie if finished with an epoxy coating, or then again it can wear really quickly, there are several grades of pen kit on the market, and you can choose which plating you prefer to use.

Thanks Gents, for your kind words, and useful criticisms..
Greggy, it isn't stained it's just the reflection from the bark. I know what you mean when you say about meeting the centre band.
The trouble is, I think they then start to look a bit thin. What we need is different sized centre bands. I'll end up making my own probably.
Doug, there is cherry and then there is Cherry. It is a wood that can be fairly bland or it can be fabulous in its figuring. If you can cut it across the grain a pen can turn out with whirls instead of parallel lines.
Paul, SWMBO is in agreement with you. She don't like it either.

Great pens John, have to say I agree with the comments above, my favourite is the cherry followed by the centre corian pen.

Regards,

It's pics like those that make me really wish I could afford a lathe! I'd love to try turning - maybe on the next big birthday...

Very impressed with them - particularly the Cherry one. I'd guess turning such a thin piece is very difficult?

:D

No, these are my 11th,12th, and 13th pen turned.
But, having said that I have been turning for 19 years, I just have never turned pens.
I do find them satisfying though. They are very quick to make, even the corian ones (made up of seven separate pieces)
You must get on to the slope and get yourself a lathe. :-k :tool:
(Now I'm about to dash out to the shed and make one in wood)

hi john
try using the comfort centreband, its slightly thicker and gives a more appealing look i feel. The yellow one has a rubber hand grip but it can left off if its not wanted.

the red one is without the rubber handgrip.

Greggy! don't be rude. (hammer)
Steve, You've just given me an idea :-k Will not say what it is just in case it don't work. :-#
If and when it does I'll let you know 8)

BTW. I made a Sierra today from Gorse, not sure whether I like it or not I'll post a pic tomorrow. See if you like it. (turns OK though)
