Hi

Anyone any recommendation for web site hosting? I'm at present using free space from a freeserve account (now EE) but it's becoming unreliable and we no way of contacting EE to resolve problems.

Cheers

I've hosted dozens of domains with Dreamhost.com for well over a decade now. Cheap as chips, great features, extremely useful user forum and help team, plus very little downtime. It's hard to find better for the measly 10$ a month they charge.

The url in my sub is hosted by them if you care to take a look.

UK based have have very good up times. By no means the cheapest but I host all my clients on there and have no problems with them for the last 4 years. Before that I was with monster and loads others which are cheap but low quality.

I am with the (oft maligned) 1and1.

Apart from a glitch transferring one of my domains they have been fine - no down time, speeds higher than my internet connection, and moderately competent support staff. I am only a hobbyist so do not drive the system hard, but I do use ssh to a git repo for my source code. My only complaint is that on my cheap package I only get one ssh user id and that is a meaningless string of characters (my account number, I think).

The initial problem was solved easily by me threatening to leave. I chose the one month-at-a-time-plan, which avoids the discount, but gives teeth to threats to leave. I actually got my problem solved by a very helpful guy in the 'are you thinking of leaving' department, and a three month credit as an apology.

Some people say that 1and1 make it difficult to leave, but on a monthly rolling contract and my websites built on my laptop then ssh'd to the server there is little that they can do to stop me. I guess that I will find out when the time comes.

Thank you all for the suggests here and those that PM'd me. I've got a number of options to look at and hopefully will get it sorted today.

Can I show my near complete ignorance, of internet jargon and ask please, what is (Web Site Hosting). :?
Should I be concerned that I do not know about it.

No technical answers please, as I am also none computer savvy.

In order for a website to be seen, it has to be on a computer that can be 'found' on the internet. It also has to have special software to respond when people ask for the pages of the website. Obviously it is better if the computer is on all the time, and can handle lots of people visiting it.

The requirements mean that it is usually easier to borrow (part of) a machine that has been set up for displaying web pages. Usually it is part of a system that copes automatically with failures - if one machine breaks another takes over. The people who run this machine keep the software properly configured and up to date. They do virus scans and make regular backups.

Because these people specialise, they can do all this better and cheaper than an individual could do.

Does that help any?

I have five domains with ICUKHosting https://www.icuk.net/
I've been with them just about since they started in 2001. They've been almost 100% reliable in that time, with just a few hours of downtime notified well in advance a few years back.
Most importantly when I've had any problems they've been extremely helpful and fast with support.
