My understanding is that, what drove many people to Hitler was the retribution in monitory term, reduction of forces and loss of land that, particularly the French exacted after WWI. At least one lesson was learnt when the allies defeated Hitler in 1945.

I think Kitchener was wary that too harsh a treatment of the Germans might provoke a further war.
He might have had some influence had he survived.
Then again the Germanic people had initiated several wars in the years prior to the great war, so no great surprise that in the aftermath of that there was an appetite to crush them once and for all.
Didn't work out too well though.

The older I get, the more I have come to understand that a tiny minority of human beings are truly despicable, amoral monsters. This trait helps them get into power, (not necessarily political power) and they then commit the most horrific crimes, whilst lying continually about how "the other guy" started it. The really weird thing is that the vast majority of human beings nod their heads sagely and go along with the evil.

Last February a gentleman by the name of Aaron Bushnell set fire to himself outside the Israeli embassy as a political statement. He died a few hours later, but before his act of insanity/desparation/heroism (pick your adjective according to your own view of the matter) he said something which has stuck with me:
"Many of us like to ask ourselves, “What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?”

The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now."

My government is currently supporting and actively contributing to an attempt at ethnic cleansing and genocide in two different countries. Your government is almost certainly doing the same. Do you know? Do you even care? What are you doing about it?

"The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing"

Me? My life is too complicated and busy and chaotic to be setting fire to myself as a form of protest, so in comparison to Aaron Bushnell, I'm not doing much. I am, however, actively trying to reduce or end my contribution to said government. I didn't vote for genocide, so I'm not going to pay for it. Self-sufficiency for the win. Starve the beast. (I tell mys3lf I am doing for moral reasons, even though i was doing it anyway. So much for morality.)

For those who dont like Israeli, https://bdsmovement.net/

For those who don't like their own government something more creative is required.

Otherwise, our kids or grandkids will be sent to the slaughter, again, for the enrichment and entertainment of the tiny minority, who will never face the repercussions of their actions, no matter if they win or lose. History repeats, etc.

It's like this left/right thing. A forum I used to love posting to in the USA is now populated almost totally by rightys. Although Trump has won they are stll angry and aggressive. I mean REALLY bat-sh*t crazy angry. This forum has its share of poster who come off as angry and antagonistic. I could understand it if we were sat in some refugee camp in Somalia or Gaza or wherever, but we all, to a lesser or greater degree, live reasonably comfortable and safe lives. Certainly relatively speaking anyway. Why so angry all the time?

And to get back on topic... that's not what my Mum and Dad fought for.

Formerly the Thetis?
Very sad story of all hands, but two, one who did not close the escape hatch correctly and therefore no one else could get out including the civilians also lost, this happened in the Liverpool sound on her sea trials, re-floated and re-named the Thunderbolt, when she was re-fitted the bow was re-enforced and was used to ram and sink two merchant ships, Bison heads where added to the flag of the Thunderbolt at a later date than the picture on post 9.

The accident attributed to the going down of the Thetis was a torpedo door stuck open, all boats after that where fitted with what is called a Thetis clip to ensure the torpedo doors are shut correctly.

I was 11 when the war ended, but remember vividly the blitz on Sheffield from the air raid shelter I also remember walking to school on a hot summer day and seeing the vapour trails from spitfires as they weaved about high up in the blue sky. I have visited the First World War battle fields the Theapville memorial with my grandfathers name on, a must. And the Second World War beaches Normandy. Also a must. As an ex Bootneck I have touched on it myself. So I say war is stupid when a misunderstanding can be resolved by talking. Man the most stupid, vicious, cruellest animal in the world. I hope Remembrance day continues for ever.
