Can a wax stick be used before finishing? I'm finishing something naturally with a wax paste finish and there are a few imperfections in the wood, I can't find a filler that matches the wood but the wax sticks are a very good match.

Might I suggest that you use a scrap of the wood and put the finish on it that you want, then match the wax stick colour to the finished piece

I have used hard waxes on numerous occasions (melted in with a small soldering iron then scraped back with a sharp cabinet scraper) and have found that if you match the colour of the timber to the wax then apply the finish the wax does not change colour when finished and stands out like the ubiquitous sore thumb

Also remember the colours of the sticks can be mixed (use an old spoon over a candle) to achieve a good match

You can use a hard wax filler before finishing but you will have the danger of the filler getting into the grain around the imperfection you are trying to fill. A sealer coat will help but you still need to be careful.
