Thanks for the comments - especially thank you Paul for the recommendation for Steve's DVD. By pure coincidence actually, I watched your video Steve on avoiding/fixing snipe on planer/thicknesser on youtube before joining this forum and thought "I wish this guy had made more videos" as I got a lot out of it - I've only just put 2 and 2 together so to speak. After a quick trip to your website I see that you sell a DVD set on Table Saw use and safety - you really didn't need to be so humble, that looks ideal for my needs and unusually reassuring too that if I have any questions I can ask you directly - invaluable.

For me, a TS looks like one hell of a scary bit of kit to fire up after reading a small Chinese-written "Chinglish" manual - partly because a friend of a friend of my Granddad was killed by an unguarded TS many decades ago (or so the story goes) when he was knocked clean out by a kickback and apparently fell onto it - I think that story has stayed with me and made me extra nervous. I've used a mitre saw day in and day out for some years and even trained as a CDT teacher (20 years ago) but table saws just weren't used back then - I can intuitively see the risks (especially of an offcut twisting and firing back). Its been my ambition/dream all my life to make a few pieces of furniture that I could be proud of and I want to make sure that I do that uneventfully.

On the router side of things, Ive decided to return the Bosch pof 1200ae as it doesn't have any way to raise or lower it easily in the router table rendering it basically useless for router table work - kicking myself for being so naive. Instead I am going to get the Triton MOF001 which has a crank to raise and lower the bit built into it and even a crank handle to lower and raise it from above the router table - genius! - and cheaper than buying a router lift.

Hi Glynster
Welcome to the forum, as people here have said your right to be careful when using a TS but you must at no time be apprehensive when taking a cut you need to sort everything out in your mind and then take the cut, being unsure while cutting could end badly.

I only had kickback once cutting some 9mm ply half way through I thought ah! that cut is a bit iffy started to over think it and bang had a bruise on my stomach for weeks, lesson well and truly learnt...

I suppose what I'm saying is respect you TS don't be scared of it...
