My siblings and i have bought a really nice Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic watch (not the ones in the photos!) for my dad’s 60th birthday in a week time, so i made this watch stand to go with the watch we got him.

So i picked a scrap i have of some fiddleback maple for the base

The main strength is from the stainless steel skeleton. I added more stainless to the base to give it more weight for stability as well as make it feel better quality

I added a chamfered angle of approx 10 degrees around the maple base. I used peacock oil for the finish

To form the shape of the top i used MDF to sandwhich the stainless

Dont have photos of the underside of the base, but i used some cut down screws as well as epoxy to fix the stainless steel to the maple.

I ended up using a bunch of spring clamps to glue the mdf halves together

but after a little sanding following the glue up it turned out ok

Next step was to stick on some EVA foam to give it some cushioning. For this I used some 3M super 77 spray adhesive, which did a great job

I cut out some suede leatherto wrap over the EVA foam. And again, i used the 3M super 77 spray adhesive to stick the leather to the foam. Scotch egg anyone? :D

My first attempt at cutting the sides ended up being blood stained, so had to scrap it

Again, no photos of it, but i treaded the exposed edges of the leather sides with some Seiwa Tokonole leather edge treatment stuff and burnished the edges with a leather burnished i made from some scrap on the lathe.

I also branded one of the sides with my makers mark.

I think it turned out alright in the end. Fingers crossed it does the watch some justice. (Again, it’s not the watch in the photos)
