Walnut Veneer

I live in hampshire and I'm looking to purchase some Walnut veneer aprox 0.6mm. I just went into Sydhams (Winchester) and they quoted £75.00 ex VAT for 1200 x 1220mm. I was thinking that price for a who 2400 x 1220 sheet. I could be out of it with prices ??

Suggestions / Advice would be welcome.

I take it you are talking about veneered mdf/ply?

Well, I don't know about these things to be honest. I want to make a cabinate that will sit on the floor that will have a projector in. I was going to build the unit and stick the veneer on the outside after building it. I want it pretty chunky (i.e. > 25mm / 1") as such I doubt I'd get MDF veneered with walnut that size. I suppose I could get 1" MDF with walnut on one side and a roll of 2" or 50mm edging strip.

I am happy to go either way I think. Sorry for being so vague.

I'd hate to be put off from doing what I want from an over priced material. I'll measure up the cuts I need and price it up.

This will be my first attempt at veneering anything. Perhaps I'll get a cheep veneer as well and make mistakes with that first !

Good luck with it. You could maybe get some of their ash or beech they have on special offer. It's also good as a backing veneer.

That price and size was probably for "flexi veneer" this is several leaves of veneer that have been jointed, stitched and bonded to a backing sheet. It makes it easier to apply as you don't have to worry about getting the edges of the leaves joined seamlessly. You will be paying for this thats why it may seem high, but thats about the going rate for walnut flexi. Based on Vales prices you are only paying an extra 30p per sq foot which is probably less than you should be allowing for waste!!

You planned method of constructing the cabinet and then veneering may cause problems as its not easy to press a sheet of veneer onto the side of a large carcase while the glue sets, though flexi V can be fixed with contact adhesive and rolled down with a J roller.

A better bet would be to make a sandwich of say two layers of 18mm ultralight MDF in the middle of two sheets of walnut one side 4mm ply. That way you are only paying for the two show faces to be in walnut and the weight won't be too high. The edges can be covered with 50mm iron on real wood edging tape. Something like this

Yep, I can see where you are coming from with this. Thanks. Equally, didn't know you could buy ultralightweight MDF. I've only see MR MDF & Normal MDF.

p.s. If you do a lot of hole drilling in tiles (bathrooms or kitchens) have a look at http://www.365drills.com/. Their plastic template used to drill against make drilling in tiles real easy - and they are pretty cheap in comparison to other products and, from my experience, they work !! Hafele have some useful screws (with adjustment) for adjusting your floating shelves - which look very nice Presume sealed...

I saw this broucher when I was in Sydnhams (Winchester) - and only thought they did "finished" walnut - but from looking on their site it does show they do unfinished which is great. I don't know what your image is, but it looks lovely - very chunky and a lovely colour - what is is ?

It's a bedside cabinet in American Black Walnut veneered MDF, (they do that in 26mm) with solid faces.

365 are a bit of a rip off, they have been cought out to be selling Aldi cutting discs at three times the price and their diamond coated holesaws are expensive.

Get a scrap of thin MDF and use the drill to cut a template then buy your drills from Richon if its just accasional use then the sets are good value.

Well, this forum is turning out to be very useful indeed. It's like having a coffee morning 24/7 at your finger tips.

This of course would be a mans coffee morning...

I have to admit, I've got some spare marine ply, I will use that and stick those little clear kitchen door stops on the back to give me some adhesion.

I bought their cutting kit about a year ago and I've just had one blade die on me. Perhaps I bought the pre-Aldi blades ?
