Actually I think it may work better on open grain. Ash is quite open grained and it worked a treat on that and much Danish furniture is in Oak with a soap finish. The open grain would pick up the soap well.

Sorry, I had completely forgotten that you were/are working in Ash. Of course you are right there are many similarities in the grain. I must try a soap finish on some scrap Oak I have.
Now the cording. What a very good method, and the finished seating looks good too.
