This is typical of the woodwork I saw out there. Not sure who buys it, certainly the locals can't afford to (one board of rough-sawn timber is about a day's wage for someone lucky enough to have a job), but there are several makers offering very similar stuff.

Unfortunately I had a nice interview with Usman, the guy who made the pieces, but it's not recorded properly :(.

Very interesting, Steve. I'm off to write out 100 times "I must never complain about a lack of tools again."

Cheers

Hi Steve.

Interesting to see your experiences in SL. What you saw seems to be fairly typical for many African countries, at least from my experience.

I hope you won't mind this  but if, having seen the video, anyone feels like looking out some tools to help guys like the ones Steve met, then there is an organisation called Tools With A Mission. They send out gifts of good quality tools to many countries enabling those who receive them to earn a living.

TWAM have volunteers around the country who collect tools so if you think you might have something take a look at the TWAM website. I have personally seen how a gift of a tool set can really change someone’s life and enable them to support themselves and their family.

Steve (the other one  )

Nice one Steve. I can also recommend Tools for Self-Reliance, with which I think Martin Brown of Brimarc is involved. He sends stuff out regularly, I believe.

It's true. I took out a suitcase of tools that are workijg but I don't use. A No4 Bailey, and old but lovely wooden foreplane of my grandad's, a panel saw of my Dad's and some other stuff. I scrounged a plumb bob and dovetail saw from my neighbour.

The trouble was, I didn't know what was going to be useful. I took a set of twist drills, but they are useless without a wheelbrace or other drill. It was an eye-opener for me.

We really don't know we are born, do we?

Cheers
Steve
