Does anyone have a source of continental-pattern front and end vice screws other than Axminster? Wasn't there a German tool supplier (retailer)? Also can anyone recommend a supplier of bench dogs - traditional rectangular ones rather than the round ones? Finally did Irwin continue to make the Record bench hold downs or is the Veritas one the only game in town, now? I can't find any referemnce to these being made any more, worse luck. I need to build a couple of new benches and I'd like to see what's available before starting, therefore all relevant suggestions gratefully received.

Tilgear Do square metal dogs with springs and they also do a Marples holdfast like the record/irwin one with the metal plate you sink into the bench.

Rutlands also do square dogs.

Is this the Germansource?

Thank you gents, Dieter Schmid was indeed the supplier of th ebetter quality vice screw. Also, thanks forthe heads up on the Marples holdfasts still being available, Jason. I thought that they had disappeared completely.

scrit what about using cut down old record quick type clamps once the
retaining bolt on the fixed has broken like mine, seems a shame to
throw them away if they can be modifed like niki did things.

Thanks for the heads up, Alf! They APTC ones are certainly a heck of a lot cheaper than the Record/Marples/Irwin variety (circa £40) - cheap enough to make it worth buying a couple to see if they're compatible. I wanted to keep with the same holdfasts as I already have several Record ones in use, notwithstanding their propensity to crush the bejaysus out of even the hardest timbers unless used with a delicate touch.

Paul

Nice idea, but I've got a compatibility issue (with two benches and another two one the way.......)

Yes, but compatibility........

scrit,
compatability, this is a new word for woodworkers is it not???

if its on the table, and its free then surely it is compatible?

Ooo, could you report back on whether they are? I've got an ancient old Marples one somewhere, sans collar...

Cheers, Alf
