I don't have an efficient way of holding boards etc when planing other than holdfasts - I'm thinking about something like this. http://www.axminster.co.uk/veritas-inset-vice but it seems very expensive - any thoughts, has anybody got one?

John

I think it was a response (customer is always right) to the interest in "wagon vises" AKA travelling
dog vises, a while back.

There are other ways to build a wagon vise into a bench design, but the Veritas is especially
easy to retro-fit.

Here's a cheaper "built in" version:

nice video on the holdfast and batten method.

Best of luck John15, there may be a day when you need to fit a proper vice, depends how much you need it!

I did a quick sketch the other day trying to figure out how he could fit one above his normal record woodworking vice.

I think the idea should work. it requires the wooden block to be fixed to some sliding runners (screwed to the front of the bench) then some kind of lead screw to pull the block forward and back. I scrounged a car jack from the tip which should do the job......hopefully. The joy of the wooden block over the veritas is you can make it as thick as you like to suit your dogs or other attachments ;)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. Although a lot of money I don't mind paying the £85 for the Veritas Insert Vise if it works well - the pictures make it look a trifle mickey mouse but maybe in the flesh it looks robust enough. The turnbuckle looks very small and fiddly but I guess a larger wooden handle could be slid over it.
No-one has come on yet who has experience of one which worries me a bit.
Thanks again

John
