Hi folks,

I received my cambered roller for the wonderful Veritas MK2 the other day and encountered something a bit odd. The threaded hole into which the brass bolt is screwed was not only internally coated with the black powder coat or whatever it is that protects the main body, but it also tapered (or the coating thickened towards the bottom). Basically this meant that I was unable to screw the bolt down far enough into the body to make it grip the shared 'upper' part, the bit that holds the blade.
Naturally my tap and die set didn't have the right piece to bore it out, so it was down to about an hour of carefully winding the brass bolt in and out, hoping that it would wear away the coating/aluminium before the bolt itself sheared off.
It worked eventually and as a guide it works as brilliantly as I expected, but I was very surprised that this unit appeared to have been so poorly finished or checked, from a company that to me embodies quality and careful manufacturing process.

Has anyone else found this with their cambered barrel assembly?

Nope. Mine worked perfectly first time out of the box. It might be better to run a tap through the thread rather than a relatively soft brass screw, if you have one of the right size. Not sure if it would be metric or imperial on a Canadian product though.

Mine worked perfectly. I'm sure if you had PM'd Martin Brown of BriMarc he would have sorted it out for you.

Cheers

Sounds like a Friday afternoon special and I just got unlucky.
I did try to tap it out first George, but sadly my set did not feature the right sized tool.

What you could have done V, is a tip that Newt gave me and that's to put some metal polish (I used Autosol but Brasso would be fine) on the thread and then wind it in a few times with the bolt acting as a tap, clears a tight (or blocked thread in your case) very quickly - Rob

Cheers Rob - that's one to remember for the future! :)

It certainly sounds like I was unlucky and won't consider it indicative (I have plans to get a Veritas plane or two when the funds are available).

What about getting a set of Stanley 050C Blades?

I can't understand why people waste their money on gimmicks like this instead of taking a little time to learn to sharpen their tools freehand, it's not difficult, just a case of avoiding a rocking motion as you go back and forth and checking progress. That way you get to spend your spare cash on 'proper' tools.

Not being an 8 year old responding to a colourful tv advert for the latest toy, but a reasonably intelligent and well informed adult I am finding it hard not to take your comment as somewhat offensive, Andy.

If I could hone freehand, I would, but as has been done to death on other threads, not everyone can. I have tried numerous jigs to make sharpening quick and effective and the Veritas Mk2 is the best of those. I'm delighted that you find freehand sharpening so effortless, doubtless you have saved a small fortune as a result and bought yourself a workshop full of 'proper' tools - bully for you, as we all know the difference between a chiwanese #5 and a Lie-Neilsen #5 is about £20. Oh no, wait a moment...

Thanks for the offer by the way Martin, but now the thread has cut through it works perfectly, so no replacement is necessary.
