My Perform CCL lathe came with a bed extension and a swivel head stock. The max. bowl diameter over the bed is about 10" but could potentially be several inches more by swivelling the head stock. I would quite like to have a go at turning a 12-14" bowl but I'm struggling to work out how the bed extension would help. The banjo and tool rest, when placed on the extension, cannot reach the front of a bowl, with my chuck in place, when the head stock is rotated through 90 degrees. Are you supposed to rotate to 135 degrees (...never tried this) or do I need to buy some sort of tool rest extension?

There shoud be an extension piece on the left of the headstock and if you put the rest extension here you can reach a bit better. Be careful however as if you have lathe on the original legs you will find the whole thing vibrates like crazy. Biggest I've turned on mine was 14" and I haven't dared go higher, partly because I would have had to overreach and partly because the lathe simply isn't strong enough.

Hope this helps

Pete
