Hi Guys,
quick question - been happily using spray adhesive for years to apply patterns, but thought I would give labels a try as they get a bit of good press on here.
Anyway, tried and cut happily, but when I tried to remove the pattern it peeled off on the top layer only, leaving the sticky behind, tried white spirit to no avail, ended up having to sand it off and was a bit of a mess.
Am I using the wrong sort of labels, or is this a common problem?
any hints welcome as I now have 99 labels left

Gill, have you tried warming the label with a hair drier or hot air gun before trying to remove it?

I use Labels4U and though they do sometimes lift the grain, they tend to come off easily, especially with a hot air gun, and white spirit gets rid of any residue. I always stick the pattern on shortly before cutting as they seem to stick more the longer they are on.

Thanks guys, labels I am using are from labels4U as they were nice and cheap, Roger, good idea with the isopropanol, will try some.
Martin, tried heat gun and it works - yay

I only ever use A4 labels these days. I find the time taken cleaning up afterwards is not much of an issue if I tease the residue with a sharp chisel. The ones I bought are from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Labels-Cop ... 160%2C160_

I agree 100% with Martin (thanks for the tip all that time ago) in that I stick the pattern down just before I cut and remove the residue as soon as I've cut out the pattern and usually find the pattern comes off fairly easily. I find the process wonderfully convenient and every bit of the pattern is stuck down firmly. Even all those little pieces to be cut out stay in place as opposed to having bits of paper flapping about using other methods.

I have noticed that when I have stuck labels on to some of my plywood it had a tenancy to lift the grain slightly when I peeled off the pattern. It hasn't ruined the piece as I tend to give each piece a quick sand with very fine sandpaper to knock-off the square corners and remove the 'fuzzies'.

Hi Barry, thanks for that. I think plywood has that tendency whatever method you use to stick patterns, in the past I have got round that by sanding and giving it a spray with sanding sealer before I cut and have found that helps

Gill.

As an alternative. I have for many years used a layer of masking tape first, then apply pattern using Pritt stick or one of the many other brands available.

Removes from cut piece as simple as every time, regardless of wood type used.

Take care.
