Urea glue spreading is a nightmare. Any pointers ?

I had 5 panels measuring 500 * 1200mm that I had to laminate and get into the vacuum bag before the glue went off. I mixed the glue at the correct ratio of 5:1. The glue has a real thick consistency and I found it really hard to spread using a foam roller. Just wondering whether there is an easier method for spreading this type of glue or whether it is generally harder than pva.

In the end I only managed to get 3 layers glued and in the bag as I was conscious of the time and pot life of the glue.

I use urea resin from these guys http://www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk/ which comes in 2 parts once mixed very easy to spread using one of these http://shop.instant-shop.com/bagpress/product220374catno70374.html I typically laminate 8 layers of 750 x 940mm the pot life is 1.5 hours at 20C. However I think you were mistaken to use a foam roller, a hard roller like this would be much better http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-j-type-veneer-roller-prod22404/ or one of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/west-system-west-system-notched-spreaders-prod29342/.

A bit of formica or thin MDF with some notches cut into it works as well.

Thanks. As I cannot get a solid roller today, I am going to spread the adhesive over the panel first and then roller it. That should make it a lot easier.

A solid roller is on the cards though.

We use the 180mm Pizzi glue spreader from Bagpress. Expensive at about £100 but speads nice and evenly and quickly.

Is your workshop very hot? This will reduce the pot life considerfably.

Actually, that is what I use, very good bit of kit if expensive. (Changed link in my original post to the correct product)

I actually had much better results spreading the glue with a spreader that I use for fibreglassing. Much easier than using the foam roller.

Notched spatula I find works best for me, you can get them in various sizes and a lot easier to clean than a roller.
