Hi all,

Please help caus i'm on the edge of a nervous breakdown after receiving a Stanley 4C today. The plane is in good condition for its age, no probs there. The plane even came with its origional box and stanley wax paper!

But the bloody seller used the box to ship in and wrapped packing tape all around it!

Does anyone have any idea or suggestion about removing that tape without also removing the outer layer of the carton box? I've tried calling Chris Angel but he prob just practiced to vanish objects with his phone ;)

Maybe it helps, its this kind of packing tape:

Thanks,
Laura

I would suggest folding the tape right back on itself and gently easing it off whilst holding down the outer box beneath right up next to the tape.

I would avoid any solvents as you will end up with a gooey mush.

Best of luck

I suggest cutting the tape between lid and box and using the tool for the next five years or so keeping it in something else, then worrying about the the tape when the adhesive has failed of its own accord.

Have you tried freezing the tape? dependant on the adhesive it may go brittle enough to fail.

I would also suggest gently heating the box with a hairdrier. It should soften and allow you to peel off the tape. This will likely leave glue residue - another story now... perhaps freezing (in a plastic bag) may now be tried before using a solvent.

Thanks all,

I'm going to do some test to look what goes best. Fortunately the packing tape it in multiple layers, so plenty of tape to test on there.

I've just sent the seller an email thanking her for the nice extra little job

"Goo Gone" from APT will dissolve the adhesive - not sure what it will do with the cardboard though?
I bought a saw a while ago where the seller wrapped it like mummy with the tape to protect the teeth - but tape off metal is an easier proposition!!
Try buying some tape and try the various options - I wonder if you could microwave it?

I know this is a fairly old thread so the particular issue has probably passed, however the solution for removing most adhesive residue is lighter fuel (the liquid type).

I always keep a can of this in my toolbox as it removes the sticky residue from labels and removes tape etc without fail every time. I usually squirt a bit on and let it soak in before removing the tape. Because it is a fairly volatile solvent it evaporates away before it has chance to damage the surface.

You can buy it in most newsagents and is worth having on hand for the next time there is something sticky to remove!

Why do you need the box?

Because it is a 'collectable' and is worth a lot more with the original packaging - just like Dinky cars in their boxes. But then you knew that already.

This tape goes hard and brittle with age if you can spare the time leave it for a few years and the tape will come off the adhesive goes powdery and most will brush away. It does take a few years.

Just remove as much of the outer layers with out damage then leave for a few years

(I have lots of boxes in my loft where I have e used parcel tape and thats what has happened to them)

The taped has all been removed without any damage. But it took a lot of precise work.

I removed the tape, also armed with some advise from somebody that does preservation and restauration work.

I gently heated the tape with a blower and carefully tried a pick up a starter. Fold the tiny flap of tape back over itself. Now the heat can be directed direcly where the tape will come lose first. Because the tape is bent 180 over it self, when pulling the tape there is little outward force on the paper of the box.

When the tape is removed you will have a box still covered in tape glue. The glue can be erased off. Never would have come up with that. You need a Steadler white eraser. Softly rub it a few time over the glue and the gleu will bond to the erasers debry and gomes off in small rubbery balls.
