No not directly. But WE5 contains a treatise on cutting fine dovetails on the BS for example. And WE10 is the definitive guide to using a dado head on a TS (safely! - to HSE standards), so handy for anyone using tongue and rebate joints for box-making.
But I suspect that the sort of box-making envisaged for the comp would not be using these techniques, which are more suited to batch-making.
The offer of a DVD as a prize was simply that, a prize, I was making no claims as to its relevance to the project! :)

If you're going to have a box making competition with the item judged at distance and by photo'd then could I suggest a box making expert like Ian Hawthorne who does show up on here every so often. http://hawthornecrafts.com/ that way he's automatically barred from entering..... :-" :-" :-"

Right, just to let you know the Mods are listening (hammer) (hammer)

We have had a chat and think the idea of a Box competition is a great idea and I am pleased to announce that it will be going ahead!!

I will be organising this so please be patient and give me a few days to put it all together.

Watch this space so to speak - I will start a formal new thread with all the details shortly.

I would be happy to help in any way I can, I would be happy to judge once or twice a year alone or as part of a panel either on a box making or furniture competition dependant on my schedule in the workshop.
We could host the competition viewing at one of our open days either boxes in July or furniture in December …. I wouldn’t be available for judging on the Open Day but could make some space available to a reasonable number of forum members to display the entries. We tend to have several forum members and mods as guests. We do usually have magazine editors at the shows as part of the demonstration team or special guest’s usually top UK makers.
I could offer a prize of £50 to be used against a course or tool purchase from us. I am afraid what I cannot offer is too much of my time organising, as you may see from my sporadic posting :) So, I am not in a position to organize or implement the competition but am more than happy to offer my facilities and expertise if you need me :D

Cheers Peter

Doing a search and trawling back through to the last comp, I recollect this perhaps won it?

...not mine, I hasten to add, but I wish it was.

You seem to have a vast knowledge of the forum for someone with 14 posts . Can you catogorrically deny you are not former member woodbloke in disguise ?

Cheers

Jon

Hi Robbie nice to see you back where have you been all this time?
Did that tissue-box really win a comp? Whose was it?

Long time lurker and not too difficult to use the 'search' function...worry not, I won't be entering the comp (far too much on my ['shop] plate)...'Woodbloke' clearly made it...I only found it....

Déjà Vu, all over again! You can't keep a good man down!

I would be interested in joining the competition personally I would say it better to allow a good time window as like many others , could not dedicate masses of time in one concerted effort . 3 to 6 months would seem sensible as it is not just time but also the design and planning and maybe experimentation for some of us .

And how about a "functional " but not fixed to one particular item / style / so that people have the chance to express there interests with out being restricted to items they may not feel comfortable or confident to make or that may require tools they do not own .

Kind regards Sam
