Actually we could do with a 'forum saw doctor'. Someone who takes care of all those Adria, LN, Veritas,Wenzloff et al. No pressure :D
Postage both ways ups the price but is made more economical through quantity.

Thanks for the link. Seems that saw doctors are rarer than rocking horse poo.

I spoke with East Midlands Saw and Tool and they have a little old wizened saw doctor that will sharpen hand saws, so I'll give them a try first off.

Hi, Hanser

I didn't spot you where in Nottingham, I would have said bring it round and I will show how to sharpen it.

I paid around £8 each + VAT a couple of years ago. They were sent off to Flinn's. postage extra.
Don't know if they were done by hand or machine.
They did say that if too many teeth were missing that they would not recut but simply just swap out the blade.

Hi Pete

I popped the saw into Long Eaton this morning.
Thanks for the offer. Perhaps next time?

For a 12 inch tenon saw the rates are - sharpen £6 + VAT, and £11 + VAT if its a recut/set etc. I'll let you know what its like in a weeks time.

Many thanks for the posts.

That's not bad.

Or, how the hell can they do a good job for that!?!?

Pete

Machine/CNC ?
The cheaper mass produced saws must be cut (sharpened) on some type of machine. I doubt that they have little elves armed with a Bahco file.
I have heard that machine re-sharpening removes more metal. Don't know if there is any truth in that.

Definitely machine. My local member of the Saw Doctors Association certainly uses a machine (Not Mid-Cornwall Saw Services as referenced above; don't know what they use) - and doesn't even know the difference between rip or crosscut. It's the number of teeth, isn't it? (Stupid woman, was implied) Even a fairly badly sharpened saw is better than a blunt one, but let's be careful out there, kids. Any ******* can call themselves a saw doctor, and they do.

I bought this modern Spear & Jackson a few years ago:

Even from new it cut pretty poor. It had the hybrid X-cut/ Rip tooth configuration, one tooth set to the left and the next two consecutive teeth set to the right - or something like that.
Last week I finally turned it into a dedicated X-cut. Took me about 1 hour to knock the set off, sharpen and reset it. Probably take less than half that time for someone who does it on a fairly regular basis.

How the hell are they making a living on that ?!?

BugBear

Double bubbling. Most of their work is on large tipped blades etc - the bloke loads the cabinet and it starts to do its stuff, and then he goes back to his bench and gets his files out and sharpens my saw. He might have to put it down a few times between trips back to the laser guided CNC cabinet thingy. So, the blokes time costs get charged in with the machine time and then they get me paying another tenner or so on top. Nice work if you can get it.

Picked up the saw on Thursday. East Midlands have recut the teeth etc -it cuts easily and straight. £10.74 all in.
