Looking for somewhere where I can find out about local courses for wood turning. I have the basics, but I am sure that being self "taught" i am not performing as I may have with say half a days tuition.

I am in Newport South wales and am prepared to travel a medium distance, but literally would not know where to start.

Heaps of thanks in advance

Best thing to do is to join a turning club.
Have a look at this one which is about 5 or 6 miles from you.
It's also an affiliated regional branch of the AWGB.

With all due respects to this club, you are really not going to get much assistance on a monthly basis; yes a club is good place to start but I would really suggest you look for assistance on a weekly meet at least.

I'm coming from the point that I have access to a local authority sponsored club and can get assistance almost any time of the day all week.

If you are going to get help once a month, you will really not progress all that fast plus when you do run into a problem it may well be a month before you can get it solved.

If you go to a club they usually have demonstrations by top turners where you will learn about finer points of technique and tools you may not have used etc. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

I have joined 2 local clubs, one monthly and the other weekly. Costs are very reasonable and just in case you are thinking you will not see anything, they usually set up a video camera or two, with a feed to a big screen tv or in the case of one club in this area a projector onto a screen.

As well as this, talk to others at the club and make friends there, then you are sure to find someone with higher skill levels than you to help you.

This is a cheaper and more sociable option than lessons.

Unless you want to have a crash course and perhaps specialise then a club (as long as it's a decent one) is probably your best bet. I was also self taught and the two things I learnt were
1. If it works for you it's probably OK
2. The skew is a brilliant tool if used properly.

Mind you our club has rteaching sessions 4 nights a week with really experts turners there including a couple of pros as well as a monthly club night so is one of the better ones.

Not sure if it is too far but the Avon & Bristol Club have a training programme operating out of a workshop with 20+ lathes in Portishead.

They meet twice a week and I think the going rate is £8 per day incl coffee + group tuition.

A google search will give details.
