May I once again ask if there are any members who care to participate in a civilised manner on the merits of particular forms, trends, finishing etc.

I know that this is something regularly addressed at local clubs but a wider spectrum of viewpoints, including those of non turners, could be good for us all who have an interest in garnering improved standards.

The List of Critique Threads forlornly awaits to record some additional participation.

Yes Chas I would like to make use of the critical powers of the members of this forum.
But I don't think it would be useful to present pieces of which I can see the flaws without help of others.

Hans

Why not, I would suggest that "Critique reqd" appears in the thread title then everyone knows you do not want just bland "thats nice" comments.

If you have reservations about aspects then maybe you may want to air them to see if others have the same interpretation.

I ususally add " comments and criticisms welcome" when I post any of my work. I get a lot of people looking but few pass comments. Don't know if this is good or bad. I can usually see what is wrong technically but realy value the comments re design etc that I do get. Working on my own with no clubs etc near I find it really useful to know what others think even though I am aware that my 'taste' isn't everyones.

The problem is Pete, as valuable as the thread 'comments' are to you and others at times, like the ones I get in 'obsession', they are hardly in depth enough to warrant inclusion in a Critique reference list which is what I had hoped to compile as a resource for others to browse.

I think specifically requesting a Critique of some pieces might engender a little more critical appraisal (not criticism).

You're probably right. In future I'll request a critique when I post any work. Won't be much for a few days as I have grandaughters coming up. Might get some done tomorrow evening....we'll see

Chas

Is there a direct link to the List of Critique Threads or does it get lost among the threads within the Wood Turning - Lathes Forum? Could it be put as a 'sticky' at the beginning? (I'm afraid I don't know really how stickies work  )

Critiques are a great way to get constructive feedback as sometimes a maker gets too close and involved in a piece to see the whole view. A comment or suggestion from a third party can cause the maker to step back and see the piece in a different way.

Have just attended the AWGB International Seminar it was interesting to see how the critique of the instant gallery has developed from a general pat on the back in the earlier seminars to good constructive criticism and discussion and this can only benefit the standard of turning in the UK. Having said that it must always be remembered that critiques are subjective and thankfully not everyone has the same taste otherwise it would be very boring

Thanks Dave,

Mark, a request on my part for a sticky was awaiting some more "Critique" participation from members, this probably contributed to the subject getting lost.

If anybody has a few pieces that they think might invoke a useful swapping of opinions on form or finish that they care to put up it might aid the development of a more regular occurrence as we loose our inhibitions.

The comments arising from the competition entries are showing some carefully considered thoughts and opinions, it would be great if we could do the same for spinney things.

PS: away from the keyboard for a few days, hopefully there will be a few links to add soon after I get back.
