Turning chisel

Hi all this is only my 2nd post as i am new to the forum and to turning in general. I was given a set of turning chisels but i cant figure out what chisel this is and what it is meant to be used for any help would be much appreciated ronnie

They used to be common in sets, I never did find out what they were actually for. Grind it as a skew or a scraper. Modern sets tend to better planned, there always used to be a couple that no one ever used.

Thank you i think that is what i will need to do with ir, otherwise it wont get used

I have seen them called a spear point scraper but like Phil I have never had the need for one. That said scrapers can be ground into any shape you need to get a particular bit of work done.

Nobody has been able to figure out a use for them so far. They were manufactured as a tool in search of a need and the need never quite materialized. However they are good for regrinding into something else.

Hi Ronnie, Im pretty sure I bought your old coronet hobby recently. Im loving it as a starter.

Well we all agreed that tool was of little use but in the hands of a good turner and a little reshape it may earn a place in the rack.

Just to add my two pence worth - I bought a set of 8 Marples turning tools about 35 years ago. Carbon steel but still very useful and indeed I still use the skews from the set. The one under discussion was included and, as has been posted, doesn't seem to be of any use at all, certainly I have never used it. I think it is time for a re-grind.

The cross section looks like a BEDAN - woodturning tool. Most major tool making companies seem to have one in its range.

Like other posters have noted I am not sure that the current profile will be much use for anything woodturning wise - I would probably reshape it as a scraper.

No, it's not a bedan. It's rectangular (like a scraper) in section with two flats ground on one side - bedans are near square in section. They used to be common in sets ........... useless, and one of the reasons for not buying sets.

I have one like that in my set of maples
I use mine to finish hollowing out pots when I have reached the stage where a bowl gauge has done it’s work and I need to refine edges
That and I use it for putting the dove tail in when preparing a foot ready for a chuck
