i want to make my aunt a jewelry box for her birthday
maybe 5" wide by 3" thick or around that size
google images hasn't given me many ideas about shape
before i start making a boring straight edged box has anyone got any pictures that can inspire me?

Have a look at either Mark Sanger or George (Cornucopia) sites as they have things that could give you ideas regarding shapes.

thank you Chas
i like the shape of the first and the nob from the last
Good choice, if it's really going to be used to keep jewellery in then the straight sides will make it a lot more practical to find things in it.

You could also make shallow round (maybe divided) trays that stack inside to make it even more useful.

thanks, i looked at Mark Sanger's stuff and it is amazing!

so i turn a spigot on each end to fit my chuck and get the shape i want. then i mark where i want the lid to join and take it down about 5mm with a wide parting tool and sand the top of the lid. then go all the way of the way with a super thin parting tool.

then i turn the inside of the top how i want.

then chuck up the base, turn down a spigot and jam the lid on and take off the spigot from the lid. then sand the top of the lid. lid done.
then turn the inside of the base and sand making sure not to remove too much wood around the lip.

then turn a jam chuck down on scrap wood and jam the base on and remove the spigot, then sand.

is that right?

i have a cherry blank around 6" x 3" and i am worried it is too plain for a simple straight edged box.
what could i do to decorate it? unfortunately i dont have any texturing tools so i am a bit stumped.
