i thought perhaps for oiling, as the motor is mounted upside down it wouldn't work !

are these old motors supposed to be oiled ?

I guess I could take the motor off and oil it - then put it back together

maybe this is a daft suggestion, but is it to let something out rather than put something in?

I don't make em, I just run 'em!

Is it a grease nipple just a guess really

Dennis

Does it look like the original motor or has it come off something else.
Could it have been a cable entry point some of the electical wizards will know

Dennis

I would say too small for a cable. Its about the same size as a car tyre valve !

Yes it IS a grease nipple.
You remove the cap, pack it with grease and as it screws back on it forces grease into the bearing. Saves the need for a pressure grease gun.
They are sometime used as part of a regular maintenance plan eg half a turn once a week slowly dispenses the grease.

As someone else has said most motors used to come with these but the 'sealed for life' bearings i.e. sealed until they die! have seen them removed for cheapness.

No not like auto grease nipples.
Yes MP grease will be fine. If the existing grease in the body of the fitting is looking a bit old then use a standard twist drill with a diameter just under the size of the plug of grease and twisting it in your fingers, dig out the old grease and discard it. Then fill both the body and the cap with fresh grease.
