Trying new shapes: critique

This was turned oncentre though it looks off at first glance. Been doing a lot of thin stemmed ones lately so decided to do something different. Still nat. edge cherry. 8" tall bowl is 2 1/2" dia. foot is statutory 2/3rds bowl dia. though looks bigger due tio shape.

I like it a lot. well done, nice work , a bit outside the norm.

Nice form and flow of line within the top section and the inclusion/void breaks up the classical shape and adds interest.

Nice quirky rustic, elegant piece of work retaining great essence of the wood and tree which possibly looks like birch. Good skill with the spindle gouge. The boy continues to make good progress.

Thaks guys. I have had it on the shelf for a few days and I must admit it's growing on me. The foot, because of the shape of the wood cut as an ellipse not a circle so was higher on one side. I had to carefully flatten the bottom and that set it offcentre. It's happened wit a couple of these. Use a log that is markedly wider at the top than the bottom and the crinklier the outside of the wood, the more shape you get in the top. As I have a few of these now, the others with thin stems, I think I'll call them Chantrelle goblets as they rmind me of the chantrelle mushroom.

Hi Pete, got to say I'm not keen on the stem of this one, the bottom bead looks too heavy/clumsy to me but that being said I very much like the flow of the bowl part and the off centre foot gives great character. I just would like to see a much 'daintier' stem on this piece, I think that would set it off much better

Have been coming back to this one off and on trying to make my mind up, not very good at sizing up rustic, JT's comment about the stem sealed my thoughts. I would prefer it without the lower bead, I find it keeps taking my eye away from, rather than leading it to the bowl which flows well.

JT: I was trying to get out of doing dainty as I've done a few of these rustic goblets getting down to a 3mm stem so decided to go for something different. That said I think you and Chas are right about the bottom bead being one too many.

It's interesting just how many threads are becooming more design orientated instead of quality of finish etc. Good way of going IMHO.
