Treating oak fire surround!

Hello all, looking for some advice on treating for my oak fire surround, I recently collected a couple of fallen logs from a dead oak tree, I carved them up with a chainsaw shaped and sensed them etc but now it’s up I’m not sure what to treat them with, there very dry and split already, I’ve read beeswax is the best linseed oil danish oil Any advice welcome, cheers

Im guessing you are single now? My mrs would have had a fit if i made that mess in our front room!! Id be living in a shed, eating baked beans, wondering where it all went wrong

she was away visiting family but yea she would of had a mare nothing a quick vax can’t fix! Anyway she loves cleaning it’s like a sport for her

I'd have thought something easy to apply with an old brush, think wax would be difficult on something so rustic. One of the many oil options would give some level of protection and also prevent to some degree dusty bits falling off, however all the oils will darken the wood. It really depends on the effect you are looking (natural, glossy, matt, etc) for and why you think you want to (colour, prevent damage from spills, stop it making dust), etc.

Any of the Osmo oils, the standard polyx will darken it slightly but top oil doesn't or you could go for a white/ grey coloured top oil for a bleached driftwood look. Fiddes wood oil is one I like similar to Osmo polyx but a bit runnier and quicker to dry.
