Hi Folks,

I saw a wooden chamfer plane for sale at 'Oldtools'. I fancy the challenge of making one. Just because, you know?

I downloaded a free eBook with plans. In the eBook there's reference to a book - 'Making Traditional Wooden Planes' by John M Whelan.

Can anyone advise me whether to not to buy? (Copies are a bit pricey from UK sellers.)

I know that once I make one plane, I shall probably be making others, so if the book is good, it would be a valuable reference.

Cheers folks...
John :) :)

Hi John,

I spotted that plane as well and the same thought occured to me about making one, or at least a chamfer plane of some sort.

Garret Hack's book on planes shows a few alternative designs in wood but sadly not enough views of each type to really get an idea of construction details.

Out of interest what is your ebook on planes you mention?

Hi Alan,

If you care to send me your email address, I will send you a copy. It is free, and there's nowt to worry about with 'distribution'!

I found the URL again... I hope this works. Just save the eBook when it comes up in your browser

His descriptions are good, but his manufacturing techniques a little odd, and little too guided by facilities he happened to have.

I certainly wouldn't pay "retail" for it.

There's a lot of good stuff (philly may have some links...) on the web.

Here's a chamfer design of mine I can help with, if you are interested. Japanese inspired... (but uses a Matheson ex-woodie blade in a bevel up configuration. 15 degree bed).

Thank you Tony...
I used abebooks once or twice before. I'll have a look. If it's reasonable.. why not? I can always move it on if necessary on 'flea-bay'.

Derek, that plane looks nice and a lot simpler in construction. I suppose one could always wedge in a wide chisel in some way; not in that plane of course, but in something similar.

Come to think of it.. Didn't I read somewhere that a plane is just a jig, to hold a chisel, and it's probably how it all started?

I think this is going to be enjoyable!

Thanks again
Regards
John :)

'Making Traditional Wooden Planes' by John M Whelan. is a very good book and worth buying

Why waste time making tools, if the goal is woodwork?

Just buy a good quality tool from a reputable manufacturer.

Hi bb,
I appreciate the sentiment, but I can counter that in only one way...

Why would I waste time in a workshop, if my goal is just making my own furniture rather than earning my living? (These days.)

I could just go to Ikea and buy some!

I reckon it's the same principle really.

I probably can buy better tools than I make, but then that goes for some of my earlier attempts at furniture. Maybe some of my later stuff too! :D

Cheers and
Alla Best

Heh. It's not mine; it was implicitly said in a recent thread about saws.

I like making (or tuning, or restoring) tools.

A lot.

Hi BB,

Ahhh... well I didn't know about the previous post!

I better have another word with Mystic Meg. She promised me I would win the lotto, because I was born on a rainy night , when Jupiter was hiding behind the Moon, three days after a total eclipse of the Sun, on a Monday... Or something like that! '
:eek:ccasion5:

I just had my weekly beer shopping trip. How can you guess! No woodwork machines for me today then... :D :D :D

Cheers
