Before I ask DDH to strip down my router, has anyone had problems with a TRA001 triton router holding its height when in a router table?

In the past I set a height with the side handle and have then just used the micro adjuster - happy days. However, now when I turn it upside down the whole lot falls back down again.

It's less than 12 months old, so in theory under warranty, but don't want to be without it if it is a simple fix.

Cheers

Have you removed the plunge Spring ? It's recommended if you have not.

I have the tra001 in my table and took the spring out before mounting it. I use the winder supplied to adjust the height from above the table and not had a problem. I have had a couple of issues, once after routing a lot of mdf which caused the cover over the switch not to close so the collet wouldn't lock. When looking up a solution to this, i did find that dust getting into parts was often the cause of issues. Might be worth having a clean and hoover where you can get to.

I often find with mine that after use, i have to lower the bit until a point when the cover goes back over the switch with a click so i can then wind up to change the bit. I always use a dust extractor by the way.

Good luck

Nick

Thanks for the responses, but the problem is the opposite to those above in that the height adjustment won't stay locked for normal use. Not sure if it is something in the handle not engaging properly, or if the clutch is worn. The Spring has been removed.

Cheers

For anyone interested, we have taken my router apart with a bit of help from Mr Girling. The teeth on the release ring had worn out, hopefully £1.79 of a replacement part should fix it. Am a bit disappointed as it is only 6 months old!

Thanks again for the help

Thank you for posting solution, will help if i have similar problem. Mine is coming up to 6 months old and is used most days but has so far been ok.

Glad you are sorted.

Nick

It's a known weak point in them. Plastic teeth but my understanding was that later models had metal teeth and so surprised yours failed unless it was old stock.

Regardless...you could not be in better hands than Ray helping you out.

Not had any problems with mine and mine is 18months old. Maybe I don't use it enough!

The worm shaft is metal, however it was the plastic teeth on the micro adjuster that had worn. It's had a reasonable amount of use, DDH says it's user (aka wife error) for not dissengaging the clutch mechanism in the handle fully before turning it.

Also, for anyone that comes across this and finds it useful, Mr Girling doesn't mention that a significant amount of cussing and swearing is required to get the two bits of the motor body apart! Happy days

Thread hijack Nick, but I am assuming you are not using a Triton table for this? Recently purchased the whole kit and caboodle and was surprised to find Triton have not provided a hole for the above table winder to fit through the table. My plan was to drill it out, but wondered if you could provide measurements from your insert?

Thanks in advance.

I needed to use my table-mounted Triton the other day and I'd quite forgotten what a depressing experience it is adjusting the height. I see I posted about this back in 2014. The Triton design is IMO lousy and I'd never buy another one.

Are you using the triton workcenter or triton table???
I have a few routers and find the Triton router one of the best, it is great for tool bit changes.
Which model do you have, and are you talking about the design of the table or the router ?

Neither. A modified Festool MFT. TRA001 and I'm talking about the router. I should add that the Triton chuck is also showing signs of wear. In the past I have had two Makita's (1/2" and 1/4") both were fine, a Triton T10 (IIRC which I still have...that went back for repair under warranty) and a DW625.

I bought the table etc and also found the same thing. I can't remember what measurements I used but I do remember it being a bit of a faff. I actually spoke to Triton about it and they said they couldn't provide a hole for every router on the market. Personally I thought that was rubbish as you'd think they'd provide one for their own routers.

Yes, exactly that. I've still not done it, got distracted, but I think it's pretty straightforward to work out from the dimple on the base now I've double checked.
