Hi all,
The Brief:
Make a toy box for my nephew to sizes given but would like his name on the box.
The Plan:
Nice simple 12mm MDF box, joined with biscuits and nail gun. Skirting around the base. Lid fixed with long contiuous piano hinge with "JACK" on the top.
I had a great idea to mask the letters out and spray them a diffferent colour. Thanks to the guys on the forum I discovered and bought some masking film. I sprayed the lid blue, cut out the letters (glad he only has a short name!!!) stuck them on and sprayed over with white.
Here I found my first problem, on the edges the coverage wasn't great so I applied about 4 coats of white. When I came to peel off the masking film it took a load of the white with it:
Some of the white also seems to have crept under the film
A re-think and I decided to cut the letters out of 3mm MDF, spray them seperate and fix them on. Worked much better!!!
So the completed toy box looks something like this:
Turned out ok in the end. Finish was Morrells Waterbourne Lacquer, 2 coats of white pigmented over a base of white primer, and a coat of clear 90% high gloss lacquer to top it off.
Hope you enjoy,
Cheers,
Richard
