I was doing a bit of primary bevel grinding on a few A2 blades this morning using the Tormek fitted with it's standard stone. However, with A2 steel the stone glazes in minutes and needs to be re-surfaced with the diamond thingie after each blade has been ground.
Has anyone had any experience of the Tormek Blackstone SB 250 stone which is meant for these more exotic steels? - Rob

Thanks Blister
Does it really grind that much quicker then? I know you have already said it does, but how much quicker. Quick enough for me to go out and buy one and proclaim "I should have got one of these much sooner!"
I really find the original Tormek wheel very slow indeed.

Yes they do sharpen quicker , but REMEMBER they are NOT for reshaping , you need to do that on a standard grinder first , WITHOUT over heating the blade ( Turning it blue ) once you have the profile you want then the sharpening is easy

It would appear reading these posts that these sharpeners were made and designed for old carbon steel blades if you have got to go on for exotics, like diamonds wheels and others.

Martin Brown at BriMarc did a test very recently on an A2 blade and the standard stone as supplied by Tormek. A complete re-grind to remove self-imposed dings on the edge was achieved in about 40secs
I was taking a lot longer (in the realms of minutes) to do the same thing so I was clearly not using the diamond dressing tool quite as robustly as intended. An excellent demonstration of just how good the Tormek system is. - Rob

WB did you notice the bench wobbling on that Tormek demo, I would think there is a great deal of pressure being applied.
I personally noticed it on a live demo I saw, do others admit they are putting a great amount of puff on to the wheel when they use these machines?

You bet there was a lot of pressure, everything I could muster-like every demo for the last 20 years. The Tormek can take it, always has and always will. Just come and see a demo to see why.

Nice video Martin ;).
You do need to use a lot of pressure - watch some of the Jeff Farris videos too - there's even a Norm show I've seen where Norm builds a sharpening stand for a Tormek with JF's help - it has a pull out step to gain height to obtain greater pressure!
Cheers
