Second cut is a medium grade, smooth cut is a fine grade & ******* cut is a coarse grade.
Needle files are about 8mm wide and Swiss files are about 18mm wide.
If you just want one to finish the edge of the laminate then this

in a smooth cut in 150mm or 200mm will clean up after a trimmer bit or putting on a small chamfer.
But this could done equally well buy gluing the right grade of sandpaper onto a bit of MDF.

Made my first ever order from Axminster, the file and block plane. Hopefully, their service will be good for me which will encourage me to use them again.

Great service from Axminster  I will be using them again. The block plane and file turned up today well packaged and as described.

Well, on Monday this week, I've handed my notice in at the joinery company I've worked for since I was 16 for 6 years. I've got two weeks notice to serve but on the 22nd I'm starting work at a furniture company!

Something I've been trying to get into for quite a while now, and finally the right opportunity has came up. I have a feeling there's going to be quite a bit of laminating work and I just wanted to brush up on my knowledge of it.

I haven't lied to the company about what I can do, they know what my experience is and there giving me the opportunity to work with them. I'll be making bespoke furniture, kitchens, studies & living spaces. They also do shop fitting. I'll be in the workshop and fitting on site.

So hopefully I'll be gaining a hell of alot more experience if everything works out alright

It sounds like a really useful next step for you - it's very much a different but complimentary skill-set.

As a newbie here I've been avidly reading old threads on the forum, including your contributions. I hope it goes really well: given your approach, it certainly should.

I'll certainly remember the start date too, as it's my dad's 80th birthday.

All the very best,

S.

Nice one Sim. I had a feeling it was something along those lines! Congratulations, and good luck.
If you can, post pictures of the stuff you're working on.

Good luck mate.

Adam.

Thanks, and I'll post pictures up once I have settled in properly. To begin with I'll just want to get settled in and work hard to try and proove my worth. Its going to be a learning curve for me, but I'm confident I can rise to the challenge.

Hi all,

Just an update on tools....

I have recieved the Axminster No.220 Block Plane I ordered http://www.axminster.co.uk/sessionID/XBO/product-Axminster-No.-220-Block-Plane-210964.htm I have set it up for use now, cleaning it up and sharpening the blade correctly. Considering its not a brand name, its first impressions once tuned up correctly are pretty good. The cut I got on a bit of softwood wasn't bad for the price I paid.

I also ordered a Vallorbe Swiss Hand File, smooth cut 200mm http://www.axminster.co.uk/sessionID/XBO/product-Vallorbe-Swiss-Hand-Files-22596.htm and a plastic handle http://www.axminster.co.uk/sessionID/XBO/product-Axminster-Easy-Grip-File-Handle-580161.htm
The two products fitted well together. I have brought this orginally for bevelling the laminates, however not started the new job yet, not tested it for that purpose. Instead I followed the YouTube Video from this topic: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/how-to-use-a-scraper-t39083.html The file worked well at sharpening up my cabinet scraper, another tool of which I will be using in my new job.

So thumbs up for them items :) Hopefully at some point I will find the time to put a review of the block plane up on my website.

Those files are really very good and relatively inexpensive too, I prefer a wooden handle (also available from Axi) myself.
