A rare mid summer day in the workshop for me today :D

here's the starting point- i was sent this wood and have been asked to make 3 bits with it- one tall box-one screw thread box and one square platter/plaque

I asked for one pratice piece per project

this oak was stained so lent itself to this job perfectly- it was laminated for me by my customer-perfect lamination

heres the 2nd plaque- marked out- i cut the radial groves with a 1/16" parting tool then carved the bisecting groves with a v tool

i blow torched it twice- wire brushing it between burnings!!

A varied selection therer George. I like those btall boxes. Unusual handle / finial on it tthough. Your idea or the customers?

Pete

Love em all George, very, very nice :D
Love the radial carving.
When you do this scorching does the wood have to be dry,not green :?: and do they warp at all from the heat :?

thanks paul- i have scorched green and dry wood (these are dry) they do not warp from the scorching but can steam allot if there really green :)

Well I am glad to posted that last picture, I had no idea you had turned it into a box.

Nice looking work George, I have a gas torch but have never taken it to wood on purpose.

Fantastic work as usual George. I have some of Benoit's images in my inspiration folder. I must admit that, until recently, I didn't realise they were boxes.

I've been thinking along the lines of geometric designs and I like what you've done there.

More than anything I can't believe your production rate! Over this weekend I've turned one 8" bowl and I haven't even got a finish on it yet!

Stunning george, really like the square plaques and the design of them, great idea's.
Many thanks for the photos too, it not easy to remember to take them when you get flowing, but these pics all help people like me.

Nice work George. I'm not usually a fan of scorched work, but that square plaque with the radial lines really "does it" for me. The tall box has a lovely shape.

How did you manage to find a customer that gives you EXTRA timber!!?? Normally I get given 3 pieces of wood and they expect 3 matching legs/spindles etc etc!!! You did well there mate!!

All lovely stuff as usual. What did you do after dinner??

Richard

Wow, the platters are lovely looking.
I have a book about David Pye you might be interested in, more carving than turning but very interesting. You can borrow it if you want.
