Preparing some timbers for a more decorative tissue box, carcass is mainly sycamore and purple heart. I think purple heart on its own is quite boring, colour becomes monotonous, however it does appeal to me when combined with a contrasting colour.

Thicknessed some p/h down using a base board so that I could reduce thickness to under 3mm for stripes.
This system works well for me if strips are around 25mm wide but if narrower the strips can break up on the cutters.

Got the sycamore cut down and pieces are numbered to avoid confusion when assembling.

Gluing up under way but going very sparsely with the glue which is runny, trying to avoid staining over surplus glue squeezing out.

Looking forward to a day in the workshop getting the box well underway and producing another artpencil box (a late request by an art club member)

The corner joints were mitred in my usual way on the tablesaw jig,

Put on the masking tape to hold pieces in position

But turn them over so they fold up when glue has been applied and then hold the box shape whilst glue sets without clamps. However because of the differing face size effect the tape does not hold quite so closely as a flat sided box.

The box glued up and external faces cleaned up, fortunately I took greater care and applied glue sparingly to the front.

I don't know what it is about this one but I really like the look of it, :D looking forward to how you make the top. :-k

Thanks Davel, nothing very inspiring about this top, just using up more offcuts that have accumulated again. Might get adventuresome because I have decided to make another 9 boxes for family xmas boxes before the cold weather arrives

Roundover bit and a rebate was applied to under edges.

Final pictures of Mark 2, without shellac and wax finish.

However M3 is on the cards, I have some p/h offcuts from this box above and going to try...................?

Now I think that it would have looked better if you had just purple heart as the contrasting wood, maybe you could try it on one of the current production?

Agreed Davel but to avoid any twisting of lid and to keep using the offcuts it is part of my setup.

Having problems how to cut new boxes to accomodate the p/h decorations.
I've kept the pieces 30" long for the present with dimensions marked on pieces but its a problem reaching the saw blade with short pieces on trial runs to get angles.

Any suggestions anyone.
