Time to have a go at turning

Hi all,

I regularly notice some of the contributors to this forum mentioning they would like to have a go at turning. There is always a few lathes available in the 'For Sale' pages on the Creative Woodturning web site.

A model 2 Record has been added today.

Just click on the CREATIVE WOODTURNING link and then the 'For Sale' button.

I don't think that CC, by allowing people to place FREE ADS on his web site, and then informing people here really counts as a commercial venture.

If Sawdust Alley feels agrieved that I choose to inform forum members when lathes or other woodturning items become available so be it.

Thanks for the comment Neil, at least you took the time to look and see they were free ads.

This is not a commercial venture, I do it for free, I AM NOT ADVERTISING MY OWN COMPANY, that is why they're called 'FREE ADS'

I always take my time to reply to queries on this forum whenever I possibly can, I try to pass on what I have taken many years to learn, also free of charge, this I normally make a large charge for when teaching turners their skills in my own workshops but on this forum I choose to do it for nothing.

SORRY! but it annoys me when I make the effort to help and then someone with the moderators power chips in and tells me I'm doing wrong.

Got to agree with Neil here, see no harm in linking to a site that features free ads and other useful information, especially when it's run by a member who has offered assistance and help to forum members in the past.

Sorry James I have to agree with the others here. Linking to a non commercial site is fine especially when his attentions were to help members.

I'm with CC on this - the free ads are a very useful "non commercial " aspect of his site.

I'm with CC on this, too. I think he should be thanked for his thoughtfulness when he gives of his time spontaneously and freely for the benefit of others.

There are plenty of links to commercial sites on this forum, but as far as I've seen it's always been done in the interests of helping out our fellow posters/woodworkers.
The spirit of the forum rule above is surely to avoid advertisers linking to their site for financial gain. That's not what CC has done here.
Don't pull CC up on a slim technicality!
Sorry SDA. But perhaps there is one post in this thread that need to be pulled :wink:

Always room for a little 'un - only problem is that my next comments mean you'll have company :? .

As I see it, James was just trying to promote the discussion of woodworking topics on the threads and stop the site from becoming too commercial. There's a bit of a difference between having various banners on a site (which I usually never notice anyway - don't tell the sponsors :wink: ) and a thread which a respected contributor draws everyones attention to.

Okay, so the concensus is that James got it wrong this time and perhaps it would have been better dealt with by PM. No arguments from me there. Nevertheless, I for one appreciate his diligence in trying to protect us from advertisers. I hope he'll remain as vigilant about such matters in the future and we'll be able to concentrate on making sawdust rather than making somebody a profit.

Hi Alf,

No excitement, just a slight misunderstanding. The reason I put the piece in the general section was a number of turners had mentioned they might like to try turning and I thought that was the best place rather than the lathes section where they may not see it.

Having looked at the thread you mention, I'm not sure if I'd count it as a blatant invasion of the forum by an advertiser. Someone asked for a particular type of machine from a particular manufacturer in a particular location. Imagine the enquiry had been about a turkey instead; someone else said "Well, if you want an animal that looks like a turkey, makes noises like a turkey and is going to be really popular at Christmas then I can let you have a turkey at a reduced rate. Yours, Mr B Matthews of Norfolk."

I think it was simply a case of NMA trying to do themselves good whilst helping out a woodworker who had effectively asked for their product. I don't know if the moderators took any action in this instance because I'm just a loud-mouth, not a moderator :wink: . However, it seems to have been an isolated incident and I don't think it should really bother us too much.

As I said in my earlier thread, I think the concensus is that CC's posting would have been better dealt with by PM. I'm aware that he is a helpful, valued contributor to this forum and it would have been appropriate to have resolved the problem behind the scenes. Personally, I probably would have agreed to leave the post alone if I'd been a moderator. Nevertheless, I can certainly understand why someone else might have formed a different opinion, especially if the post was taken at face value. As I said, I'm just happy that the moderators are being vigilant against the invasion of the forum by commercialism.
