Hi all, got a job coming up , to build a 2 story extension for a customer. The plans have been drawn up as a traditional
block construction, now the customer wants to go down the timber stick frame construction route which is no problem,
as the timber frame company is designing the structure and building control is ok with the change.
The customer was asking what the advantages are which is mainly speed and cost saving and greater insulation but i could not
think of any disadvantages. Can anyone come up with any ?

Mortgage companies sometimes do not like timber construction. Fire risk. Green oak frames will split and twist as they dry out, which is not to some peoples taste. If exposed, timber framing does not led itself to a modern design aesthetic of sleek lines and minimalist architecture.

Personally I much prefer timber frames and would love a green oak building or similar, but each to their own!

Yes green oak timber frame would be lovely but this will be 4 x 2 frame just nailed together, the usual plaster board
interior with a Larch clad exterior, something between the jointed frame method and a SIP panel. All made in a factory
and craned into place. Just a skeleton which i shall do the rest.
