Does anyone know to any decent timber yards within the west midlands area.

where ever i seem to go nowadays its the same old... "too expensive we only do pine now.."

any help would be great

however, i have found Dawson Bros & Henry Venables.
maybe someone used them? and are they good on prices?

regards

Venables has been going since god was a boy. I've never used them but my dad used to rate them.

The other place you could try is Whitmore's near Hinckley. You can't just turn up though, you have to book a slot, and they charge you more if you want to select the boards yourself rather than just order 5 cubic feet of English oak, for example. They have 22 acres of planked oak! Very good selection of lots of stuf and reasonable prices. They also supply other timberyards. I once bought some ABW from my local F&W and it came from Whitmore's.

I remember the famous Alan aka "Village silly person" going on about Dawson brothers in Dudley. I can't remember where I stored the pdf he sent for their prices but as I recall they were pretty reasonable on hardwoods.

I use Whitmores too - I get the french oak, - looks about the same , but cheaper than the english :)

I've never been told they charge more to select ? .. I just turn up and tell them I want to get what I want !

I have ordered Oak from Whitmores before, just phoned up and asked for 6 boards at 7 foot x 9" x 1", no problem, all the boards were good quality, having said that, I went with a friend who wanted some Iroko for windows and we sorted through about 50 boards to get 10, and they chopped them in half so they'd fit in the car.
Good service.

thanks alot guys, i will give them a bell, i've also found their website which i must say i'm impressed. :D

they are roughly 39 mile from me, which isn't too bad
and prices are good (looking at their ebay shop:!:)
