If a rotten small section of window cill had to be cut out and a new piece fitted what joint would you use?
I saw one today which had been replaced about a year ago and the carpenter had just used a mitre joint.
The result is that one year on an unsightly gap of around 2mm has appeared between the sections.
Would a scarf joint be better or something else?

TBH it all depends on the access and time available to do the job. I have worked for companies and only been given an hour or so to splice a cill or frame.
It might be the timber has shrunk a lot if in the sun? Or it may have had that gap originally and been filled? A lot of work like that nowadays doesn't pay so gets rushed/ bodged :(

That is one of the reasons i got out of the maintenance/ housing association side of things. Too much work for too little time/ money.
For instance one company i worked for had a job come through to replace a gate latch for £7. My wages at the time was £8.55, travel to get there was at least 45 min each way, diesel, Plus travel time to the merchants and back to the job, plus cost of the latch. All in i think the job took over 2 hours. So all in all the job probably cost around £30 to do.

In an ideal world i guess a scarf joint would be the best, but very rare you get time to do that.
