Having moved North last year I have finally started looking for a hardwood supplier locally.
I came across this site,

www.dannyfrost.co.uk

Telephoned and set off yesterday to see what they had.
The owner could not have been more helpful, showing my wife and myself round the site, looking at the kiln drying process, and the many outbuildings containing local hardwoods.
We also saw some commissions being worked on.

The company is situated on a farm in the Cumbrian hills, and unlike some suppliers we were made welcome, and told that when I was ready to purchase, could come down and sort through his stock to find the best configs of timber.
I left with a price list, and will be returning when the nights draw in and the garden projects are finished.

I am sure you are aware of John Boddy Timbers Ltd in Boroughbridge. They are located near the A1 but I guess quit a trek form north of the border. Having said that their range of hardwoods is vast and their brochure is real cabinetmakers porn

Yes, I have used JB. I went to the woodworking show at Birmingham (industrial, 5 axis machines etc) a couple of years ago. They had a super stand and as you say literature is excellent.
They claim sustainable sources of supply from Brazil etc but I hear illegal logging doesn't go into the governments figures for what is actually cut down. If they did the sustainable, wouldn't be sustainable.
It's hard to know who to believe.

Bought my Elm for the Sideboard I made from Danny, which can be seen elsewhere in the projects section. I also bought some Sycamore. He has a lot of good timber, at good prices, but you have to search quite hard on your own to get it. All the best stuff is I presume is kept for himself! You can also look at the links below, but Scotland is a very big place, it would help if you said where you were based?

In the northeast, there are a some more suppliers -
Piercy Hardwoods of Ythanwells (really out in the wilds between Turriff and Huntly) Mostly air-dried local stuff, so it needs sorting over, but proprietor doesn't seem to mind
Lethenty Mill, near Inverurie, very high quality stuff, very helpful proprietor
Colin Cooper, near Mintlaw. Mostly turning blanks (he used to supply most of Axminsters blanks) and, again, very helpful

Mike,

I've used Lanarkshire Hardwoods (near Carnwath) quite a few times and found them to be very good. Not the biggest selection in the world, but all local wood and well dried.

Cheers,

Dod

Hello,

I had a similarly astonishing experience at this place:

http://www.gs-specialist-timber.co.uk/

Also in cumbria - near penrith. Maybe it's something about timber merchants in this area!

They seemed to stock a few machines and some LN planes when I was there. ...and they have alpacas on site!

I'm extremely new to all this and the guy that runs the place showed me how he calculates cubic footages of wood and gave me plenty of space to look through his off cuts. Was really taken aback.

Hope this helps someone...

Ben

There's Burhouse just North of Perth and there's a good one between Dunfermline and Kincardine Bridge at Inzivar woods next to Oakley.
