Greetings to you all, I've just joined the site and have really enjoyed looking at the work. I think I'll need to get some serious workshop hours in to come up to required standard. I was looking for your help really, I live in Shropshire and was wondering whether any of you could recommend a good hardwood supplier in my area (ish). I am not looking for anything too exotic, local or the usual US stuff would be fine, but I want decent quality and reasonably dry. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Peter.

Peter,
Welcome to the forum.

See my sig for a Google map of timber suppliers.

Thanks for that one as well Chris
BTW they are a bit short on suppliers north of Leeds :)

I suppose they go out and cut up park seats north of there, do they? :)

Welcome to the forum Peter, if you have not found them yet I can recommend Ockenden Timber, not far from you. Need to give them a call if you are looking for planks or slabs to see what they have available.

Welcome to the forum, Peter.

Good Brothers (Mortimers Cross) in North Herefordshire do good oak - green and kiln dried at good prices.

... and a slab of beech that cost me about £1 from them 20 odd years ago still does duty as my bench top :)
Don't know whether B & J. Davies sawmills are still operating in Bucknell (South Shrops), but they used to have some interesting native timber. There also used to be quite a lot of reclaimed timber advertised in the Hereford local press.

Alan, thanks for the link, there seems to be a real shortage of decent hardwood suppliers around the West Mids.

What are there prices like?

I will be out and about tomorrow and see if I can swing past and pickup a price list and publish it in a PDF format for all members to view.

The beauty of Dawsons they let you select the timber your self and are willing to machine small quantities. And the staffs are most helpful even Terry can put a smile on his face.

Hi Team

As promised I paid a visit to Dawson Timber collect there current price list and have published it in a PDF format so feel free down loaded and print a copy off if you wish by just following the link below. The prices shown are correct at 10th January 2008 any further information can be obtained from them direct.

If you are thing that Dawson Bros is like one of the big sheds with every thing neatly laid out pre-wrapped in plastic then you are in for a shock they are traditional timber importers and saw mill and work normal business hrs 8.00 am till 40.00 pm Monday to Friday only so its no place that you can take your family to for a day out.

The list of suppliers at the end of an article in this month's F&C includes the following:

"Friendly supplier of fine cabinet making wood

Jack Clark, Rolston Timbers, Leigh Sinton, near Worcester

Tel.: 01886 833612"

Hope this is of help - Roy

Just a quick thank you to all those who replied to my post. I'll let you know how I get on.
