Any ideas please, I would describe it as Pink Oak :) ?

As I've said many times before, expert microscopic analysis of an end grain slice or a botanical identification of the leaf/twig structure of the tree is the only way to accurately identify a timber - Rob

Does look very much like the grain from a big slab of beech, and its got the tell tale pink hue of steamed beech which is more commercially available.

Looks vaguely like beech to me also. Is that a sawn finish or has it be planed the wrong way (against the grain)?

Honestly guys, this is American Red Oak...not beech. I bought an old pub floor once that had been chucked in a skip.........all American red oak. I've used loads of it....and am as certain as you can be from a photo that that is what you are dealing with here.

As a test, wipe some vinegar over it with wire wool.......

.............and tell me what happens.

Mike

I am inclined to say that this definately looks like american red oak

Hi all,

Deffinatly not Beech and I would doubt it's ARO. I'd say its a type of Sapele. I know it's normally darker than this but I have had some delivered to me before that has been this nasty salmon pink. It should be quite light weight if I'm right! It caused me a right head ache with colour matching!!!!!

As I've said before.... Where's the fun in that :?:

I will report back on the vinegar treatment Mike, but will I loose the colour effect or get a nasty patch?

Richard it is underweight. So it would almost be classed as an Albino type sapele because of its colour :)

Just enough on the board to make a small box.

Vinegar and iron filings will turn this jet black if it is oak.........and stain it a dirty yellow colour if it isn't. It only stains the top few microns...........it will soon sand or plane off.

Mike

Any iron filings will do, or even just some rust flakes.......drop them into a little vinegar, leave it a few minutes then brush on. The effect is instant.

Ah! Now, when you look at it from that face....

:D :D :D :D

I go back to my original posting...........don't use this stuff outdoors. It will rot in very short order. Another test you can do with it......not quite so conclusive as the ebonising test........is to take a short length of it and use it like a straw in a glass of water, but blow instead of suck. It is so porous that the water will bubble!

You can perhaps tell that I really don't like it very much at all.....
