Bit of a random topic, but I always find gioing to the timber merchants difficult! Just feel like they talk in a different language! Probably the problem is me, but when I go I like to just browse the wood, different types , sizes etc etc. then I get asked what im looking for. I have no answer! Always walk in thinking what catches my eye and what I could make with it! Then im confronted with questions, and told it costs x amount per cubic foot, whats that all! I just go in looking for random pieces and strips! I dont want a cubic foot! Ask someone speak metric and they look at you like you should be on some special register! I Like wickes where you can just go in and pick up different sizes, but the problem being they only do two different types of wood! And its crap! Rant over!

If you want to buy a sausage go to a butcher, if you want a pig see a farmer, and if you want horse well any super store will do.
In other words it sounds as if your in the wrong place, timber yards are really wholesalers you may be more comfortable at a retail type company, they are about.

A cubic foot is a 12' length of 12"x 1", or part there of.
Or, 3.6m length of 300mm x25mm if you only speak euro regards Rodders

I do find the two that I go to are generally quite good, if you have a chat to them at the counter first, they'll price things up, give you options and advice, before going up to the yard proper to get the wood.

morfa, are talking about builders merchants or timber yards? i'm looking for a decent timber supplier, kiln dried. for all kinds of timber.

no, it's just me, checking, some people get timber from b&q, some from a builders merchant and some from "proper" timber yards. I just fancy being able to go and get timber within viewing distance, at the moment it comes from over the bridge.

thanks for the info, i'll check them out.

Is Pontrilas Timber too far to go? Halfway between Abergavenny and Hereford http://www.pontrilastimber.co.uk/

Of course, if you fancied a bit more of a drive, why not come up to Ledbury to one of HJ Pugh's auctions? Or you can always bid online and then come and collect if your bid wins. I have managed to come away without anything sometimes although it is tempting not to. I'm having a bit of a clearout and will have 30 or lots (mainly airdried ash) in their January sale.
