Timber identification

Can anyone identify this length of timber I was given. I’m laminating pieces of it together to make turning blanks. Used one and it’s pretty hard.

Thanks Niall. That would explain the difficulty hollowing out end grain goblet then. Worked well though I think.

I can see similarities with both ash and elm based on the grain, but I'd put my bet on ash based on the light colouring. All the elm I have is darker than this.
 
(1) There is a mottling in the grain that is characteristic of elm.

(2) It could be wych elm.

(3) When being worked, smell is a distinguishing characteristic. A hollow chisel can get quite warm and accentuates this. So - how was it?
