Looked at the catalogue, and was a little disappointed. Plenty of stuff, but not what I was looking for. That said, I probably will go for a look and things often look better than the catalogue description.

Is there a decent quantity of timber for sale that isn't oak???

Just been to the preview.
Sadly, pretty disappointing. A lot of the timber, while looking good on paper, is twisted or has significant splits and knots creating limited useable stuff. A lot was pretty wet too
It worries me that so much is asterisked ie liable for Vat too.
I did go for specific stuff so it may well be worth going for those who are just up for some timber.
The prize lots IMO are:
65- 68 Elm slabs - pretty impressive. One of them (mislabelled I think) is vast - If I was hanging around I'd bid just to make it into a big table top.
266 and 267 are very beautiful bits of hornbeam
202 is a knockout piece of spalted beech.
Didn't really look at the tools but the Sheppach PT looks tidy (if it works) with only minor rust on the CI outfeed table. On reading the catalogue (I only printed out the wood bit) it says 12in but I thought I saw it was a 260 not 320 but could be wrong. The Axminster wide belt sander could be a good buy too.
Having seen that they haven't got what I'm after, I'm going to have a lie in but good luck to those going - there will I'm sure be some bargains to be had.

I thought the same this morning. There were a lot of people bidding on what I thought was rubbish. I decided to cut my losses and left after the first few lots. Had plenty to do at home instead.

Dave I might have been one of those :lol: First time at an auction, probably had mug written all over me.
However, was pleased with my haul, some yew but my prize was 2 cu ft of maple board for £20. (though someone is going to tell me I could have got them for half that from B&Q with each Triton router) I was only after some hardwood [Edit, yes I know yew is a softwood] offcuts to play with, I'm still relatively new to this game, but learnt a lot and enjoyed myself. The one bargain I saw someone walk off with was two 120x8x2 hornbeam planks for £30 each. Would have loved those for the kitchen I'm going to build in a few months time, but they would be tricky to get home in a Peugeot 306.

Are these sales literally annual? If so I'll have to put a reminder in my diary for next year.

The only sale I know nearer S'ton (but not much) is Interesting Timbers south of Bath. They seem to have occasional auctions, and the one time I went stuff was of good quality and reasonable price.
But with all auctions, it depends who else is there

Unfortunately I was after a few bits but just couldn't be bothered with waiting for them. I had the feeling that lots of other people would also want the same bits. Of course I'll kick myself when I see the results.

to be honest I don't know what I am going to make yet. The yew planks have a couple of nice wany edges and I could put them together with the 24x2x2 squares to make a low coffee table type thing.
The maple I might use to make some building blocks, I make toys for my nephew and niece and our first is on the way so I have to get in some practice. I also want to make a little plane adjusting mallet, and will use a small bit of maple for that. Apart from that I'm not sure, I've got quite a lot of it so I'm just going to let it stare at me until I come up with something. I've also got a load of oak I've got to turn into a bed and also I've got a kitchen to make for us in a few months time... round about the time I become a first time Dad.
so I'm confident it will all be sorted about August time :shock:
If I feel inspired, I'll get the camera out and post some progress pictures.

I went to the auction yesterday. There didn't seem to be many bargains to be had although I came away with 9 big pieces of 1 1/2" sycamore for £12. Most are split and 2 have been put out to burn because of worm holes, but I am hopeful that I can get something out of the rest it.
