After 15 years in one house, I've accumulated a load of timber of one sort and another, some left over from projects, some bought or acquired on spec. Now we are planning to move house to the other end of the country (Penrith area) and I can't decide whether it is worth lugging all my timber up there or to try and dispose of it down here, then start buying again after the move.

Any thoughts?

Probably best if I come and pick it up for you. It would be too much to move
Helpful Philly

Have you ever used old stock for a new job ? I use my stock if i need a bit of beading or a small amount , if its a new job i price the wood into the job and buy new ,giving me more stock . At the end of the day you end up with loads of wood you never use . Having said that moving to a new house you could well use it , my house is built from offcuts and bits left over .
Id take the best stuff and give the rest away on here to non trade .
BUT ! why not tell us what you have and i may change my mind on the above comments

What you got? Possibly forum members might be interested in buying up some stock if you decide not to take it

What you got?

It's a long way to tote wood that you might not use,I would sort out the very best to take with you and get rid of the rest. You are moving to a beautiful part of the country dick, I used to live in Whitehaven but I worked for Woolworth's as a store tec and went to a different store everyday so I got to know the area very well, I also got paid to follow the ladies about , summertime was great!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) . Hope the move goes well for you.

I think it might be wise to first ascertain if there's a good source of supply in your new locale before you off-load what you have. Personally I'd only get rid of wood as a very last resort - if you saw the size of stuff I keep in my off-cuts boxes you'd realise that without me saying it. I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day, a retired pro, and he said he was up in the loft looking for a board (oak for a garden bench - found a lovely 1/4 sawn board and couldn't bear to use it. Too good for a bench!) and he reckons if he works flat out 'til he shuffles off this mortal coil he'll be going some if he gets through 5% of what he has. The trouble is, and the reason why he hasn't off-loaded any of it, he doesn't know which 5%... #-o

Cheers, Alf

I'd only take anything decent - near Penrith puts you somewhere very handy for GS specialist timber, and I'm sure there is a woodworking machinery dealer on Gillwilly industrial estate.

ooh ooh,
you're the first forum member i've seen who also lives in Milton Keynes.
I'd be very interested to hear what you have, and what you don't want to take.

The only stock i've got atm is some 18x150mm Pine boards.

So adding some real wood to that would be great.
Also, if there are any large workshop power tools that you think might be too heavy to take with you then i'm sure I could be persuaded to lighten the load :)

My workshop/garage is quite full ATM as i'm storing a load of stuff for my Dad (he's getting a large shed built in his new house)

Sorry to hear you're leaving MK. Do you know of any other woodies around our area?

Thanks
J

Thanks for that Philly - I'll sort out all the pieces with those little round holes and associated piles of dust all ready for you!!

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. <If> everything goes according to plan, and the move goes ahead, I'll certainly offer stuff on here.
Will probably also be clearing out some woodworking books, and a small lathe. The potential workshop space at the "other end" may not quite take my lifetime's accumulation of stuff......

I'm fairly sure that there is a supplier of timber just outside Penrith, a mile or so in the Keswick direction. That said, if you need to offload any more once you've freed yourself of the misery of land south of Preston I'm sure I could help :D

Good luck with the move, I'm sure you won't regret it. They don't call it the Rain District for nowt you know.

Cheers,

Dod

MY parents go backwards and forwards between the UK and Australia and every time my father takes all the timber and even a kitchen sink. About 6 times so far they have done this trip in the last 15 years.
