ok so having thought my way around the best way to use the oak veneered mdf i got from jason, i have come up with one final potential
problem.

how do you stop wicking up from the bottom ?

by that i mean, if i do not put a face frame on the bottom, and veneer is too narrow how do you stop any moisture getting in when it is on the floor?

i thought about just varnish, put what else does anyone else think.

i guess the answer is how often do you guys use veneered mdf boards directly on the floors, and how do you protect them???

If your floor is that damp I would be worried :D

Just put a coat of your chosen finish on the unseen cut edges, we won't let on that you have not edge banded them. I usually don't bother with the back/bottom unless its in a moist enviroment like a bathroom.

foolishly, i use floorboards, and the easiest way to keep them clean is to wash them. that means water, and that means wicking.

the other question is is their banding that wide in oak?????

and unfortunately jason i know you will tell, if not tomorrow,
then maybe today

If its free standing on a floor the bigger problem is the veneer being chipped if the piece is moved, Not sure of your base design but iron on edging can be had upto 50mm, just been using some today.

On free standing pieces I tend to use the nylon headed "plastinail" glides, they can be adjusted with a block plane if the furniture rocks a bit and if kept a couple of inches from the back will stop the unit tilting forwards if on carpet gripper.

Jason

actually i was thinking about making cut-outs on either side to reduce the floor profile, and also make it more stable.

where did you get the 50 mm stuff jason??
paul

Paul,

I put up some MDF cupboards in my garage/workshop and to get around this issue I just used a suitably sized bit of softwood for the bottom bit. I painted mine, so I suspect that Jasons suggestion of some wee feety things is probably your best bet.

I usually get my 22 & 30mm wide edging from the same sourceas my boards in 50m rolls

For small quantities (10m) and 50mm wide stuff then I use South London Hardwoods who will pop a roll in the post to you.

Jason

I normally make a plinth for my units to sit on , softwood and paint it black or solid oak . You could always buy a flash power mop and not let the bleach get near the unit

now you want me to use bleach to clean too??? there we are re-cycling trees, and you want me to use dangerous chemicals.

will check out the edging, and look at maybe oak plinths.

thanks again
paul
