Well having finished the corner cabinet today started work on a small cherry telephone table.

Goth the legs turned and basic frame completed with rails in place.

This is going to have an inlaid cherry top, inlaid fielded panels in the sides and a pair of traditional framed doors with matching inlaid fielded panels. An open space will be left under the top for phone book etc.

I will try and update this each day so that you can see the progress - there wont be much tomorrow as will be in and out of the workshop like a yoyo - couple of deliveries and customers to see.

Not the best photos i'm afraid as taken on my phone as forgot to take my camera to workshop #-o #-o

Looks good, is it normal on a telephone table(I've never made one) to have a shelf above a shelf? Chris Tribe made one also in the project section in a similar vein, if a bit more contemporary.

The client wanted it to have a top surface for his phones base unit, a shelf for easy access to phone book etc and it had to be high enough off the ground to slide his slippers/shoes under!

Hence the design.

I like the overall design ... Looking good.
Some time ago, I made a Telephone Table, but SWIMBO decided she didn't want a new handset. Thus, the phone is still on the wall, and the table got sold!

Hey-ho!

Nice one Rog.

Well another day under my belt and the inlays are in the Door and side panels as well as around the top.

and having got it all glued up and rubbed down/scraped have applied three coats of Danish Oil which has brought out the colour of the Cherry nicely.

Looks good Rog, I like the contrast of the solid and the banding, and the top looks great. Have you used European/native throughout? Or is it cut from it's cousin from over the pond, the legs look like Am Cherry, but that's probably a trick of the camera. I find when I've photographed stuff and put it on my computer, it sometimes looks completely different than in the flesh.

It is all European, the legs were cut from a larger thick sectioned piece from a different batch to the rest of the stock.

Good looking table Roger. Cherry always looks so dull until you put the finish on it, then the grain stands out like magic. I like the crisp turning particularly. Do you have any concerns about possible movement in the lower top?

Chris

The shelf under the top is mounted on buttons grooved into the rails below it, and the front edge is screwed to the lower rail. The board will stay flat but should there be any slight shrinkage then the back edge will move towards the front - The front appearance will always remain unchanged.

Saying that though, the cherry used has been in my woodstore for about 10 years and I have had no issues with previous projects made from it.

Nice project.

But they needed the shelf for the phonebook #-o

The last time I saw or used a phone book was about 10 years ago.

What hight is the topshelf

Its for a retired gentleman and yes he does still use a phone book and the yellow pages. The top was 24" tall.

All finished today and delivered on the way home.
