Sorry I forgot to answer you about the grooves. I first cut the grooves with the edge of a parting tool then burn them with piano wire held in 2 pieces of dowel (like a cheese wire) whilst turning the piece at a reasonable speed in the lathe. until you can' see it for smoke :lol: :lol:

i wouldnt swear to it but i think the rippling comes from the wood being under tension while growing , as it is in the fork of a tree.
