Rippled Ash is what gives it the stripes around the sides, I don't know what causes it but the effect is good. Have a look at this one https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/view ... hp?t=31267
The tee light is just the offcut from the goblet.
Maybe someone can tell me what causes the ripple effect

Sorry I forgot to answer you about the grooves. I first cut the grooves with the edge of a parting tool then burn them with piano wire held in 2 pieces of dowel (like a cheese wire) whilst turning the piece at a reasonable speed in the lathe. until you can' see it for smoke :lol: :lol:

i wouldnt swear to it but i think the rippling comes from the wood being under tension while growing , as it is in the fork of a tree.
