I like to make thin boxes.

My current project has sides of 8mm thick.

The problem is hinges. The sides are too thin for screws to go into and anyway, regular hinges would over-hang.

Does anyone know of wrap-over hinges that might be better?

Another problem is that the sides are so thin that screws poke through!

I know this isn't what you are looking for, but here it goes anyhoo...

Another suggestion that you could try is....
Buy a piano hinge http://www.hafele.co.uk/Hafele35a1/...me=Piano+hinges&classlevel=4915&tab=furniture Cut down to a small piece in length, then cut in width to suit the 8mm sides, and then drill and countersink your own hole. Find some screws that are a 3mm head.

I used to work for a company that at one point made a sh*tload of softwood boxes for Boots the chemist, they were about 150mm cubed and were made to contain small bottles of smellies. The sides were about 8mm thick and they sliced a hole from the knuckle point down at a 45' angle in the main box and 45' up into the lid. The hinges used had no holes, they just pushed into the slots. They worked rather well, but my problem now is trying to find them on interweb and I'm rather drunk

If the design of the box is suitable, you could fabricate wooden hinges and glue them on the outside to make a feature.

Yes - wooden!

I'm sorry that I can't find a particular reference at the moment - I will try to find something suitable.

They are fairly easily made, and can be quite attractive if not too heavy

If you google "Making Wooden Hinges" the first three (at least) will give you plenty of food for thought.

HTH

In the past I have made wooden hinges which have proved very reliable. But IMHO you will need to take care to keep the "weight" down.

They can be fixed either just using standard wood glue, or located on small wooden pins for a more positive fixing.
